Sungkyunkwan University, or SKKU, was founded in 1398 as the highest national educational institute in the early years of the Joseon Dynasty in Korea. The oldest university in East Asia, it has fostered leaders of our society for over 600 years.
Pronounced as 'Su-Gi-Chi-In,' SKKU's main ideology, teaches that SKKU students strive to perfect themselves as leaders and contribute to our society. This ideology is the fundamental principle by which SKKU brought up leading Korean professionals and scholars for over 600 years.
SKKU aims to educate future global leaders following this ideology so that it will further contribute to the international society.
Under the catch-phrase 'Unique Origin Unique Future,' SKKU continuously pursues to integrate its foundation philosophy with modern technology, cultivating global talents who will lead the 21st century.
Founded over 600 years ago by royal decree to promote scholarship in Confucianism., old Sungkyunkwan went through all the vicissitudes of the country it served over the centuries.
Of course a long history alone cannot guarantee the excellence of an institution, the rich culture, which exudes from a long tradition, is surely a unique and valuable asset of the University. It would be misleading, however, to view the University merely in the context of its pre-modern history.
What the University has achieved in the past fifty years meets and exceeds that of the preceding five hundred and fifty years. We take pride in the University's innovative spirit; as a result of the long efforts to place natural sciences on an equal footing with our strong foundation in humanities, we now operate two campuses: the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus and the Natural Sciences Campus. Based on a highly successful partnership with Samsung which has generously funded several core initiatives, the University has been rapidly developing and prospering since 1996.
It is Sungkyunkwan University’s strong ambition is to be ranked amongst the Top 100 Research Universities. This will be possible through the generous and continuous support of Samsung, a company which values 'vision' as the most important factor of success.
To this extent, SKKU set out 5 important Strategic Tasks, to which our participation to the AUSMIP+ will make a valuable contribution;
- To ensure professors meet global standards
- To enroll excellent students
- To add a third campus
- To develop globally competitive educational program
- To establish an advanced administration program and secure strong financial support
Over the past years, SKKU equally established numerous links with internationally renowned partners all over the world. Our International partners include 450 Universities, such as UT Austin, Utrecht, Heidelberg, Sheffield, Leiden, Uppsala, among many others. Important strategic alliances with 15 Universities, such as Indiana University, UC Berkeley, MIT, Minnesota, Fordham, UT Austin, University of Iowa, Georgia Tech, Waseda, HU, Peking, Fudan, HIT, JLU and NTU were established, to which we soon hope to include the AUSMIP+ partnership.
Exchange of students is organized with over 70 Universities in 50 Countries, and faculty mobility partners include 145 Universities , such as Cambridge, MIT, Fordham, NTU, Peking, Fudan, and so on.
Excellence in Research.
To ensure SKKU’s position as an innovative research centre ‘par excellence’, SKKU has established cutting-edge research infrastructure, relying on a global network of analysis professionals, providing research equipment and support for industrial-academic research projects. Simultaneously training programs designated for efficient equipment utilization and maintenance are provided.
In addition the specialized Cooperative Center for Research Facilities was founded in August 2001 with the objective of enhancing research capacity of the university through equipment sharing, promoting industrial-academic research collaborations and establishing a global network of professionals specializing in analysis field.
The center is equipped with many advanced scientific instruments and facilities worth 13 billion won, including FE-TEM to support the needs of academic and industrial researchers. In addition, the center operates various training programs designed to provide equipment operators with technical knowledge and skills that are required for efficient utilization and maintenance.
The center has launched a long-term strategy aimed at becoming a world-class unit specializing in the analysis field. By building its reputation in such fields, the center is committed to expand its role in improving research environment in the university and increasing industrial-academic research collaboration by contributing to the development of new technologies.
Depending on their choice of research topic, SKKU’s infrastructure and know-how will be accessible to all AUSMIP+ scholars and researchers.
AUSMIP+ & U-City
U-City, is a new concept in city planning, providing a convenient, safe, and comfortable lifestyle for people of the twenty-first century. In addition, it allows real-time business transactions and supports information and communication services by upgrading existing information infrastructure and integrating urban features and activities into urban spaces through ubiquitous information services, resulting in more efficient urban planning and management. Our department aims to establish various areas of specialty to develop a core group of u-City experts by achieving close cooperation among related departments within each university and instituting a core area of expertise at each university.
In view of Korea’s rapidly changing demographics, the Korean ministry of Land Transport and Maritime Affairs set up a special program, encompassing four Korean top-universities to accelerate research in the field of the U-city and establish doctoral programs to enhance the formation of specialists in a variety of u-city related domains of expertise and knowledge, through a close and trans-disciplinary collaboration among departments and partners. Pursuing similar goals, but from different angles, the AUSMIP+ will work as an incubator to generate new concepts and expertise.
SKKU u-City Department already is introducing various improved and innovative systems and processes, with a high potential impact on our conception, use and planning of the city and buildings.
The Department of U-city and engineering will participate to the AUSMIP+ program through its eight laboratories, each specialized in a specific domain related to the concept of the ubiquitous city.
The AUSMIP+ program will offer SKKU a unique chance to share know-how and expertise from a variety of fields through our European and Asia-Pacific partners, advancing research, masters’ and doctoral level courses at all universities. A highly educated workforce is in demand and preparation to meet the challenges of society is to be fostered by the AUSMIP+ program, as it will;
- Allow integrated specializations and expertise in u-City construction, management, administration and technology (e.g., advanced IT), among others.
- Cultivate professionals who can lead u-City development and urban redevelopment in the rapidly changing urban environment
- Educate specialists who can provide integrated solutions for u-City development based on technology-centered knowledge.
- Foster world-class leaders who can guide a new construction culture
- Train u-City specialists with expertise in a wide range of academic disciplines
Assistance & accommodation for AUSMIP+ scholars
AUSMIP+ scholars and faculty will be assisted by SKKU’s international office, which apart from any necessary administrative support also will arrange accommodation at the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus. A dormitory for international students operated by International Relations Office and one-bedroom apartments operated by Office of Student Affairs is available.
Incoming AUSMIP+ individuals will be entitled to engage in Korean language course, at the Sungkyun Language Institute (SLI). So far about 7.000 foreigners who came to study the Korean Language and Korean culture have completed this course and currently the average of 220-250 students per semester are enrolling in our Korean language course. It has been recognized for its successful educational result for which our qualified instructors, various textbooks, and interesting classes take credit.
